Some wine recommendations taken from The Book of Wine by Joanna Simon

Chardonnay

Burgundy, including Chablis

Sauvignon Blanc

Two focal points: the Loire, especially Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume; and Marlborough, New Zealand. Also significant in Bordeaux and Bergerac; Rueda in Spain, Styria in Austria; Chile, especially Casablanca; South Africa; and California.

Riesling

Throughout Germany, but especially Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Nahe, Rehingau, Rehinhessen, and Pfalz; Alsace; Austria, especially Wachau; and Australia, especially the Clare and Eden valleys.

Carbernet Sauvignon

Bordeaux; Australia, California, Chile, Argentina, South Africa, New Zealand, France’s Vin de Pays d’Oc region, Washington State, Tuscany.

Pinot Noir

Burgundy, but keep an eye on California, Oregon, New Zealand and Australia

Syrah/Shiraz

Rhone, especially the northern stretch, all over Australia, but especially the Barossa Valley; southern France, especially Languedoc; and almost anywhere else whee it is warm enough.
